I just started my period, and my mom wants me to visit a gynecologist. None
of my friends who have started their periods have gone, and I am wondering
whether it is really necessary for me to go, or whether I can wait awhile

If you are sexually active or have health problems related to the
reproductive system, you should see a gynecologist no matter how old you are.
But if you are not sexually active and have no problems, there is no need for
you to see a gynecologist until you reach 18 years of age.
