When Will I Start My Period?
Dear BeingGirl Experts,
When do you think I will start my period, and what do I do if it starts at school?

Dear Abby,
You will start your period when your body is ready. Most girls start between the ages of 9 and 15. Worrying won’t help you start. Read the information in http://www.beinggirl.com/article/first-periods/ and this should be helpful.
Another article worth checking out is http://www.beinggirl.com/article/signs-of-your-first-period .
The actual flow of your period doesn't feel like much—most girls can't feel it coming out. When you actually get a period, you may feel some dampness in the lining area of your undies.
Having a dark brown menstrual discharge is not unusual. Menstrual blood may be red, pink or brown. Often girls aren't aware of this when they first start and don't even know they are menstruating when in fact they are.
Your period will probably not come flowing out heavily immediately from the start. It is more likely that you will notice some dampness or wetness and excuse yourself to the restroom to find that it has begun. You should be carrying your menstrual protection in a backpack or purse, and just take that with you to the bathroom. Changing during class breaks or lunch makes the most sense. If you aren't sure when your period is due, wear an Always pantiliner daily and avoid any accidents. Also, check out the location in your school where emergency menstrual products are kept. Sometimes it is with the school nurse, the health/physical education teacher or even the school secretary.
Hope this is helpful,
