Hello BeingGirl Experts, I am 15 and I started my period a year ago. Now my mom wants me to go to a gynecologist. Should I? I don't have any problems and I am a virgin. Also, what does a gynecologist do to you? --- Dear Clueless, A gynecologist is a medical doctor with additional training in women's health and their reproductive system. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends females have their first visit between the ages of 13 and 15. Unless you have problems related to your menstrual health, you probably do not have to see a gynecologist. Your own pediatrician, adolescent medicine physician or pediatrician will do. However, it is a good idea to see a gynecologist if you are sexually active. Other than that, you can wait until age 18 to have your first exam and Pap smear.
