When To See A Gyno

Hello BeingGirl Experts,

I am 15 and I started my period a year ago. Now my mom wants me to go to a gynecologist. Should I? I don't have any problems and I am a virgin. Also, what does a gynecologist do to you?

---

Dear Clueless,

A gynecologist is a medical doctor with additional training in women's health and their reproductive system. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends females have their first visit between the ages of 13 and 15. Unless you have problems related to your menstrual health, you probably do not have to see a gynecologist. Your own pediatrician, adolescent medicine physician or pediatrician will do. However, it is a good idea to see a gynecologist if you are sexually active. Other than that, you can wait until age 18 to have your first exam and Pap smear. You can find more information about what to expect at a gynecological exam on BeingGirl.com

Hope this is helpful,

I started going to the gyno when i was 13. I have a guy for my gyno, and i didn't really like it at first, actually i hated it.. i hated the fact of letting him see my vagina and touching it. BUt he's really gentle and really nice.i just don't like it still when he touches my vagina for a long time, or touches me in a way i feel is innapropriote, but its his job... so i can't do anything about it. and he's really cute 2!!!!

Girls! Don't worry! I went to see a gyno sometime last year because I had a really bad yeast infection that my regular doctor couldn't cure after several doses of medicine. It was quite strange and (as many things are as growing up as girls) gross. She wanted to see the inside of my vagina so inserted this duck-bill shaped thing and opened it. When she did, it was very painful because she said she thought my hymen is too thick and when I start my period, I might not be able to insert a tampon without help from her to stretch and or break it. Now I've started my period and as she predicted, I can't insert a tampon. I'm getting my hymen stretched soon! Your experience will be different than mine!!

I went to a gyno when I was 12 bc I had a birth defect 'down south' that would fix itself, but I needed to go and make sure everything was ok before I got my period. Get a female gyno, it's much more comfortable. And please! RELAX! It makes everything alot harder if you are hyperventillating. They know you are sensitive, and scared, but they are really nice and gentile. :)
