Hello, BeingGirl Experts,

I'm Lori and I just got my period for the second time. My first time was light and this time it's really heavy. But my main question is, is it normal for it to come out it like clots or thick pieces of blood? I'm kinda new at this. Can you answer my question?

Dear Lori,

Menstrual fluid is not just liquid. It is made up of blood and tissue from the uterine wall. Most clots that you see are actually larger pieces of the endometrium (the uterine lining). As long as your flow doesn't last longer than seven days, and you are not saturating a super tampon or pad within one hour, your flow is within normal range. If you feel uncomfortable with this, you should contact your doctor/health care provider and let him/her know what is causing you concern.

Hey Lori, I haven't had my period yet, but I know exactly what you're talking about. When I was about 10, (and I'm 13 now) I saw my mom, she had what was called "period clot." I was like "Ewww" haha. She told me it was normal and I got scared. But it's totally ok. :)
