How Can I Convince Mom To Let Me Use Tampons?

Dear BeingGirl Experts,

Help! My mom has never used tampons and doesn't understand why I want to. I have tried to explain to her that I want to be able to at least have options, but she thinks that since she didn't need to use tampons, I shouldn't have to either. This is especially urgent because summer is coming up, and I don't want to have to say to my friends that I can't go swimming or hang out by the pool because my mom doesn't want me to use tampons. What should I do?

Dear Mama's girl,

Your mom may be concerned because she doesn't know enough about tampons. You have to do some work to educate her on why using tampons is a good decision for YOU. That means you have to be totally informed!

First, read the info in the Period Protection [link to My Period > Period Protection] so you understand the proper use of tampons. Also, look at the information here [link to ART655] so you understand the risks of TSS. Next, tell your mom why you want to use tampons. Menstruation can be stressful for girls. The easier you can make it for yourself, the better.

Make a list of the reasons why tampons would improve your life. When you're ready, sit down with your mom and explain your list to her. Hopefully, she'll see your point of view.

Good luck!

For me when I started my period right away my mom got me tampons because she is a dancer too and they are more comfortable to her. If your mom is not like my mom then you should just explain that you would like to try tampons because you think that you might like them better than pads. Ask me any questions.:)

Tell ur mom why u want to switch. Tell her how u feel about pads and how their more complicated than tampons. Kinda bring up the subject talking about tampons then say what u need to say. Hope this helps

My mom uses tampons but dosn't let my sister and I use them. If i tell her that i might leak when i am swimming, she says well it never happened to your sister. She just dosn't want to except the fact that we are growing. HELP!

Here's what I did to ask: My mom was off somewhere and I just texted her. It was so much easier texting her than trying to ask her to her face.

Tell her that you want to go swimming with your friends and don't want to be a bystander (and not have fun too). If you plan on doing any sporting activities, tampons are a lot more comfortable to wear when it's that time of the month.

My mom uses tampons all the time but shee uses the supper kind. I hade my period in august 2011 and she didn't want me using tampons then. I understand that but when my period does comeback I want extra coverage just in case. Isn't it me who decides what I prefer.. not my mom?
