Learning To Love What You See In The Mirror: Teenager’s Body Image Tips

Having a poor body image is somewhat normal during your adolescent years. As your appearance changes, media images of other women may leave you with questions about how you should really look. The simple answer is, there is no one answer. Just remember that healthy bodies come in various shapes and sizes.

A Healthy Teenager's Body Image Tips

Don't judge your body parts individually

Try experiencing your body as a whole. Be aware of how much time you spend worrying about your looksobsessing how much happier you'd be if you were taller, shorter, thinner, or if you had curlier hair, longer legs, a smaller noseinstead of doing things that you really enjoy.

Don't diet

Instead, learn about eating and exercise habits that will help you achieve a healthy body that's comfortable for you and will serve you throughout your life.

Don't try to conform to the beauty ideals promoted by airbrushed, Photoshopped, flawless celebrities

Unless you have a professional stylist and makeup artist living in your home, you may never look exactly like the people you see on TV or in magazines. Be a trendsetter and find your own style. Give up glossy fashion magazines, TV, or surfing the Internet for a week. See if you feel differently about yourself.

What I don't get is how some people who are tall thing and pretty say they are so fat and ugly. They have no idea what it is like to be actually fat and ugly like me. My says point out the positive instead of the negative but I can't find any positive. MOST of the girls say I look pretty ect but the guys call fat ugly and worthless and they have almost convinced that i am....

It took me forever to be comfortable with my body and I really love everything about it except my boobs. They're my main insecurity but I try really hard to just embrace what I have because that's the only way to reaally be happy. Getting fake things done to your body will not make you feel any better in the long run. #StayReal<3 Love your bod c:

In the mirror, all I see is this THING staring back at me. My body disgusts me. I don't think I'm pretty, or skinny. I'm a freshman, 5"7 1/2, 190 pounds. I will have these mood swings where one minute I'm like, oh well I look beautiful today. Then the next minute, I hate myself, I change into baggier clothes to hide my many imperfections. I have stretch marks everywhere that remind me that I am fat, no matter what my family says. I have a boyfriend, my first one, so you would think "Oh, that means he's attracted to me in some way. Maybe I am pretty" But I just can't love myself. I don't find myself attractive at all, so how can he? I feel like I need to be comfortable with myself, before I will ever be comfortable with him. This sucks. I hate feelings this way. I am sorry, I just needed to rant a little... Sorry it is so wordy and whiney sounding.

I look at the mirror...and all I see is a skinny, ugly, tall girl with pimples on her cheeks! People say im beautiful, that my slanted eyes (im of asian descent) are nice, and that being tall and thin is amazing. Me: not so. But i will have to learn to love who i am and focus on what i have and not on what i dont. thanx beinggirl! ive been coming to this site since i was 12 (now 15)

When I look into the mirror. I realize that I am not of the beauty I see when I am not facing myself. I am not thin. I am not of a pretty face. And I see emotions etched on my face that I am not able to hide. My forced smile fades to a frown and my eyes moisten as I stare at the worthless nothing in the glass, mirror, or anything reflective. I turn away and go on. Knowing that after some time I will think of myself more beautiful than I am. And it will start again as I pass the glass window and it stares at me, hate, despair, depression, and hurt across it's face.

@Ryebug1 its exactly the same for me except im in eight grade and im like 5"2... im a bit below 120 and to be honest most of my weight is in my thighs... i used to be a little less insecure but then in 6th grade a bunch of guys would call me ugly or fat..now everyone tells me in soo thin or at least you are thin and you actually have hips.. it doesnt really make a difference though cuz ill always see myself as that fat ugly girl... i really hope you arent like me

well everyone is usually a different height and shape according to their genes. Once in awhile, I dont like what I see in the mirror, but I accepted of how i grown and thats all that matters! LOVE YOURSELF AND EMBRACE YOURSELF! i presonally dont care what others think of me anymore, so if people dont like the way i am....oh well :) too bad for those people :)

im very uncomfortable with my weight... all my friends are itty bitty and then there is me, a chunky girl... i'm 5'8 and weigh 160 the doctor says that's a healthy weight for a 16 year old but i still don't feel comfortable... but to all you girls out there feeling sad about the way you look... know you all are beautiful in your own way!!! we all are not "model" like but we are our selves! and don't EVER let anyone tell you differently! Try doing something that compliments your favorite feature, for instance I personally like the way my face and hair looks when I'm done up, so I take pictures. :) I hope that this helps anyone <3 #Stay Strong Beauties <3

I dunno 'bout ya guys, but me? Weeel, I can't tell if I'm perty er not. Still, nearly a freshman now, I do avoid mirrors in public because the mirror-me does NOT look "good" like everybody's mirror-them! I'm losing it by now... cra-Z me! Sometimes, I go "Hmmm, not bad... not sooo good tho either" when other times it's "Awww, perty cute, kinda, maybe, sorta." Bad self-esteem = unhappy you, boo-hoo. :((( What's my prob???
