I just used my first tampon a few days ago. I only kept in for an hour because I didn't want to sleep with it in just yet. I tried using another one today, but it didn't feel like it was in the whole way. I am scared that it won't be all the way in. Or blood will "seep" out. What can I do to reassure me?

Dear Kellyn,

During your period a tampon can be left in the vagina from 4–8 hours. Taking the tampon out too early may have caused some irritation. Why don’t you wait until my next period and try again?

Use lowest absorbency appropriate for your flow. I'd start with a Tampax Pearl Lites tampon. If after 4 hours of use you remove it and it is completely saturated (no white showing), I'd move to a regular absorbency. If there was a lot of white on the tampon, I wouldn't take the next one out for 6 hours. That's how you decide which is the lowest absorbency for your flow. If you are nervous about leakage, try using a pantiliner with the tampon. It can take some experience, but you will figure out which is the right absorbency for you and how long to wear a tampon.
