How Do I Talk To Dad About My Period?

Dear BeingGirl Experts,

I live with my dad, not my mom, and I am really scared to tell him when I get my period. I have pads that I bought and my dad does not know.

What do I do? How do I tell him?

Dear Addy,

Dad will need to know when you start your period. Believe it or not your dad does know about them. Telling him may be a little embarrassing, especially if you aren't used to talking about such things. Face-to face is always best. You could take a straight-up approach and just tell him. Saying something like, "This is uncomfortable for me, but I want and need you to know I started my period."

If it is hard for you to start a face-to-face discussion, leave your dad a note where only he will find it. You could say something like "Dad, We need to talk, but I am just having a tough time telling you that I have started my period. I need some supplies and want to pick them out. Can you help me arrange this?" That way, he'll start the conversation with you and you won't have to worry about bringing it up. You might also want to send dad a link to an article or page that interests you on www.beinggirl.com so he can get up to speed on the "girl stuff" you want him to know about! If this totally unnerves you, enlist the help of your grandmother, aunt, family friend, teacher, coach, friend's mother, or school nurse to talk with you about female issues. This person might also be able to help you to relay some of your concerns to your dad.

Trust me, Dad will want to know!

the first time i got my period, i told my brother. he was the only one home & i was nervous. he is 4 years older than me and knew more about it than i did. i never had a close relationship with my mom and my dad passed when i was very young. it sounds awkward but i trust and love my brother. i can tell him anything without him judging.. just understanding. this just goes to show that besides your parents, there are other adults or people you can speak to about these things like siblings or school counselors. just make sure you can trust the person.

When it comes to me, I'm just the opposite of most girls. I'm closer to my daddy and tell him EVERYTHING. I don't really tell my mom things but I will tell my dad anything. I'm not very close to my mom at all. I love both of them, though. I think you should try to hang out with your dad more often and get closer to him, so it will be easier to tell him thing. :-)

I havent started my period yet but when I do I don't really want my dad 2 know! I keep telling my mom that I don't want her 2 tell him he will figure it out when I tell him he's going 2 b a grandpa! It just feels uncomfortable 4 some1 that doesn't go through the same things that I do 2 know! Cause the he won't take me seriously and then he keeps bugging me cause he wants 2 if I've started my period! Sorry! I tend 2 ramble sometimes!!

My mom tells my dad EVERYTHING about me, so when I started my period,she told him. Then one day he brought it up to me, and I went very red in the face!

My friends mom died so she lives with her dad she was really scard about gettin her period so I made a kit for her with my mom this is what it had in it. 2 packs of u by kotexs tween pads 2 pack of Tampax pear compact tampons light 2 pack of carefree panty liners 1 pack of tampax pear tampon multipack My mom also talked to her dad about it and he gives her money and with the money she buys the things she needs for my friends period.
