Get tips on how to talk to your mom and dad about puberty.

It's totally normal to be nervous about having the talk with your mom about your first period. But remember, not so long ago, your mom was nervous about having that same talk! Really, it's not so bad once you get started. So check out these tips on getting the conversation going and don't miss our cool printable notes!

Maybe the idea of a big sit-down with your mom seems intimidating. So, try opening the conversation casually by saying something like, "Hey Mom, when you were younger, were you nervous about getting your period?" This opens the door to discussion and gives your mom the chance to open up, too.

If it's hard for you to start a face-to-face discussion, leave your mom a note where only she'd find it. You could say something like, "Mom, I need some info about getting my first period. Can we talk tonight?" That way, she'll initiate a conversation with you and you won't have to worry about bringing it up.

You could take a straight-up approach and just tell her your feelings. Start by saying something like, "This is an embarrassing topic for me, but I need to talk to you about my period." That way, you and your mom can get to the point right away, and your mom can do her best to make the convo as un-icky as possible.

Can’t seem to find the right words? We’ve found them for you. Just choose the First Period Talk note that sounds most like you. Print and sign it, then give it to your mom (or leave it where only she'll be able to find it).

Hi, danica1289! That stuff in your undies isn't your period, but it is discharge - a sign that you're going to get your period soon! Don't be nervous about talking to your mom. Just remember that she went through this too! Good luck! :)

I was reading this article about the three signs of starting your first period. When I found out I had all the symptoms, I got really scared because I needed to were pantiliners so I had to tell my parents. Today I went to walmart with my mom to buy me some school clothes.when we were done with all of clothes shopping we went to an aisle with tampons, pads, and etc. at that point, I knew I had to tell my mom. I brang it up incasual conversation. " mom when I go to the restroom I see this yellow/white stuff in my underwear. do you know what it is?" she said it was because I was going to start my period soon. my mom was really understanding. now its not a big secret anymore. im glad I told her. I hope this is helpful to all the other girls :]

hey so first of all Becemm, don't talk to your parents like that and go to your mom not your dad, or both. just do your mom cause you cant just ask your DAD! "yo, what's a tampon iz have no idea what it is." it just sounds weird. and you mom would have a better prospective of it. -anniegirl
