Dreading the first period talk? It’s not as bad as you think!

Get tips on how to talk to your mom and dad about puberty.

It's totally normal to be nervous about having the talk with your mom about your first period. But remember, not so long ago, your mom was nervous about having that same talk! Really, it's not so bad once you get started. So check out these tips on getting the conversation going and don't miss our cool printable notes!

Maybe the idea of a big sit-down with your mom seems intimidating. So, try opening the conversation casually by saying something like, "Hey Mom, when you were younger, were you nervous about getting your period?" This opens the door to discussion and gives your mom the chance to open up, too.

If it's hard for you to start a face-to-face discussion, leave your mom a note where only she'd find it. You could say something like, "Mom, I need some info about getting my first period. Can we talk tonight?" That way, she'll initiate a conversation with you and you won't have to worry about bringing it up.

You could take a straight-up approach and just tell her your feelings. Start by saying something like, "This is an embarrassing topic for me, but I need to talk to you about my period." That way, you and your mom can get to the point right away, and your mom can do her best to make the convo as un-icky as possible.

Can’t seem to find the right words? We’ve found them for you. Just choose the First Period Talk note that sounds most like you. Print and sign it, then give it to your mom (or leave it where only she'll be able to find it).

I got my period and at first I was gonna keep it a secret.. But then I went in my moms room and texted her, she let me stay home the next day and told my dad. DEFINITELY tell a trusted adult right away in the next hour or two..sooner the better.

Well my mom gave me the talk before my period happened. So i knew what i was gonna tell my mom when it happened. And there was a puberty class at my elementary school where they had all the girls together and talked about hygine and your period so i know mostly about it.

I got my first period right after my bff moved and me and my mom were at Walmart and i saw a brown spot i was freaking out but i didn't tell my mom so i secretly bought some pads a couple months later and i got everything settled and after about a year my bff moved back and almost 4 months later i had to have surgery and so i wasn't currently on my period so i made a plan and i brought 2 pairs of underwear and i put fake blood in one of them and then put the non-bloody pair on and when i saw my mom i was like mommy i saw blood so she told the nurse then after i got out of surgery me my mom and my friend went to the mall and i went to the bathroom and when i came out my mom was like was there more blood so i said yeah and she said your a big girl now momma and i said i don't wanna have a long talk and she said oh i don't plan on it its as simple as that!

Not hard at all. I told my mom and my DAD! It was a little hard to tell my dad because he is a guy but he is your dad don't be afraid to tell people or adults you TRUST! Don't tell some one you don't trust.
