I'm 17 and my periods are sometimes irregular. I'm thinking about making my first trip to the gyno and I'm scared to death. How should I ask my mom, what should I expect, and how do I feel comfy asking the doc questions?

Dear Cheryl,

Based on your age and with your periods being irregular a visit with your gynecologist is a responsible choice. As a matter of fact, it is recommended sometime between the ages of 13 and 15 teen girls have their first visit with their gynecologist so you are certainly due this visit.

Chances are mom will encourage you to schedule a gynecological appointment. As for how to approach mom, we like the direct approach where you just ask her face-to-face, but if you are more comfortable you can ask her by text or email.

Your doctor will be aware this is your first visit and will try to make you as comfortable as possible. During the visit your new doctor will ask you some questions and provide time for you to ask some! This is a time you can ask about many of those private things you have been wondering about puberty, your body, periods, acne, weight, body/facial hair, sexual activity, birth control, etc. Make a list before you go, so you don't forget any of your important questions. You can always give your questions to the nurse so she or the doctor can go over them with you if you are too nervous to ask them.

Relax and you will be fine through this!
