Dear BeingGirl Experts,

When I get my period, will there be a lot of blood? About how much (on average) should I expect?

Thanks,

Mariah

Dear Mariah,

When girls start having periods (menstruating) they usually get a damp feeling in the lining of their panties. Your period will probably not come flowing out heavily immediately from the start. Periods are a drip with your flow stopping and starting. It isn’t like a faucet!

Normal blood loss during an entire period is between 30–80 ml (about 2–8 tablespoons). The length of an average period is about four days (plus or minus 2–3 days). Often this surprises us because it can seem like more when this is what most females experience.

Hope this helpful,

Your BeingGirl Experts

When i got my first period, my stomach felt full for 2 days before it actually happened. i had it for 5 days lightly. 3 months later, i got it again, but heavier and longer. when ur cycles are irregular, make sure u are always prepared and dont be afraid if more blood comes and it lasts longer than the first.

I think how much blood you loose depends on how active you are. I take more than 10 hours of ballet at my dance academy a week and I have a light period because I'm really active.

On my last period, when I woke up one day the amount of blood on the overnight pad, and on my underwear was ridiculous, the pad was completely saturated, the front of my underwear was soaked and it was gross, I don't care what anybody said, that felt like more than 8O ml to me.

When I get my period, sometimes it's really heavy at first, or it's light. I get really bad pressure in my stomach. I only get a couple cramps. After 2 days it stops, it goes to light, then a few hours later, it gets really heavy again.
