Having Trouble Inserting Tampons?

Dear BeingGirl Experts,

Last night I tried to use a tampon for the fist time and it didn't work. Can some girls not use tampons or is something wrong with me?

Hope

---

Dear Hope,

Nothing is wrong with you. If you haven't done so already, read the tampon insertion instructions in (About Me, Menstruation). The information and diagrams there will help you with your insertion

If you are doing it right and still can't insert a tampon, your hymen (the thin membrane that partially covers and protects the opening to your vagina) may be too small or tight to allow the tampon in. If this is the problem, you may have to stretch the opening. You can try using a bit of water-soluble gel like K-Y jelly on the tip of the applicator. Don't worry—you won't be hurting yourself. The opening is flexible. The more you practice, the more you will stretch the hymen. If you cannot stretch it yourself, you might want to see your doctor.

Take care,

Your BeingGirl Experts

Sometimes it helps to use a small mirror to see down there and help you know what you are doing and where to put the tampon in. :)

Putting in tampons is easy for me but I don't like to use them because Its pretty much raising the risk of T.S.S. I use pads but I use tampons only when I really need to.
