How To Insert A Tampon

Dear Iris,

When I use a tampon it doesn't expand in me, and it always leaks. I want to use a tampon, but I guess I am not doing it right. Why doesn't it protect me? All my friends use them and they work. Can you please help me?

Dear Rachel,

It sounds like you need to make sure your tampon is inserted correctly. Check out http://www.beinggirl.com/article/how-to-use-a-tampon/ for tampon insertion details. Also, knowing that sometimes the menstrual fluid slides down the folds in the vaginal wall and doesn't come in contact with your tampon may be helpful. Try to angle it to one side or the other as you insert it as this can help. Another tip is to make sure your tampon is not too absorbent for your flow. If you continue to have this problem, I'd suggest asking your gynecologist/healthcare provider at your next check-up about this and see what s/he recommends.

Good luck!
