How Do I Use Tampons?

Hi BeingGirl Experts,

I am 14 years old and would like to know the best position to insert my tampon, as I am quite tight down there. Also, if I found myself without a tampon, could I roll some toilet tissue up and insert that as a substitute?

Thanks,

Gillian

Dear Gillian,

We recommend only using commercially-manufactured tampons. Never insert toilet tissue. When first learning to insert a tampon you may find putting one leg up on the toilet seat and spreading the labia with one hand may make tampon insertion easier for you. If insertion is still a problem, try lying on your back and inserting it—you won't have to worry about balancing. BeingGirl has great articles and videos giving step-by-step instructions you might find helpful as you learn.

Good luck,
