How Can I Get Help For Bulimia?

Dear BeingGirl Experts,

I know my problems aren't as big as the other girls in here, but it's bugging me for a long time. I was sort of bulimic like a year ago, then I started up again. I've been having major pains in the throat and stomach. I don't know what's wrong with me. Do you?

I strongly advise for you to discuss your eating disorder with your doctor/health care provider. I am passing along information on bulimia to show you what happens when bulimia goes untreated. Bulimics risk these health problems:

  • Serious electrolyte imbalances.
  • Vomiting, laxatives, and diuretics can really mess up your body chemistry.
  • Irregular heartbeat that can lead to heart failure and death.
  • Cavities and discolored teeth; the stomach acids in vomit can erode tooth enamel; torn lining of the throat, esophagus, and stomach as a result of self-induced vomiting.
  • Difficulty going to the bathroom from laxative abuse.
  • Heart failure.
  • Abuse of emetics (substances that make you vomit) can result in heart failure and death.

Some of your symptoms/pain reflect these risks. You should share your concerns with your mother and see a health care provider for diagnosis and treatment.

Please take of yourself and get the medical help you need,

Your BeingGirl Experts
