What Can I Do To Stop A Heavy Period?

Dear BeingGirl Experts,

My periods are very heavy and last a long time. My mother's periods were heavy too, and so are my sister's. My mom says it's just the way we are, but I wonder if there's anything I can do about it. I also seem to bruise easily. Could this be related, or am I worrying for nothing?

Thanks,

Zoe

Dear Zoe,

It is possible your bruising and heavy periods are related. Both are symptoms of a bleeding disorder called von Willebrand Disease, or VWD. (Other signs are frequent nosebleeds and unusual bleeding after surgery or dental work.) VWD is common and tends to run in families. If you think you might have von Willebrand Disease, ask mom to make you an appointment with your doctor/healthcare provider. Your doctor may refer you to a hematologist (blood specialist) for testing or a bleeding disorders clinic. If diagnosed with it, a hematologist can treat your symptoms and help get your bleeding under control. For more information you can contact the National Hemophilia Foundation (www.hemophilia.org) at 1-800-42-HANDI or the Canadian Hemophilia Society (www.hemophilia.ca) at 1-800-668-2686.

Good luck,
