I wanted to know why some family members get their period at the same time.

Dear Anna,

This is a phenomenon known as menstrual synchrony. It occurs when women share the same living space. Each woman secretes substances called pheromones. These are scents (chemical means of communication) that are undetectable to our conscious sense of smell. However the female who produces the strongest pheromones causes the other females menstrual cycles to move closer to hers.

It weird because I live 9 hours away from one of my sisters but every time I see her we are both on our periods at the same time.

319princess u may have it at the same time she did but u might not. my mom had hers at 13 i had mine at 11. so chances r urs wil be around the same time. hope this helped!:)

I didn't even know this! That's weird...but cool at the same time. I've always wondered why my mom and I often get our periods almost at the same week of the month. First she gets hers on the first days, and then I get mine. And my usual 7 day period cut down to 5, just like hers. LoL.

could this be genetic? two of my sisters live with one family, and me and my other sister live with another, but often when we visit we are all on our periods.

My BFF and I had been sleeping over for three days, and I was on my period and she got hers for the first time. I gave her some pads and tampons, and then we looked up this article to find out why we were on the same cycle. :)

My friend and I are always hanging out. We've known each other for a good 2 years and were really close but our periods never meet up with each other. Sometimes if she has her period I will skip mine the next month, then when i get mine she sometimes skips hers too. Our cycle is constantly changing. Is that normal?
