Dear Leah,

You can start to menstruate any time of the day our night. Also, know you can have flow throughout 24 hours. Most girls have their periods during the night. Since it's a gravity drip, you may be lighter while sleeping. However, many girls experience a heavy period when sleeping, so there's no rule. You'll learn from your own experience what to expect. As tampons must be changed every 4–8 hours, consider using a pad if you routinely sleep longer than 8 hours.

I'm just scared to death and beyond keeping my tampon in for more than an hour, so I highly recommend overnight pads of high absorbency.

Like Lia, I suggest sleeping on an old, white towel which u can bleach afterward, and try not to sleep face up b/c the blood can rush faster like that (down ur butt srry) , its best to sleep on your side or face down.

Okay, Here is a tip (I don't have mine yet but am a really smart chick that thinks of EVERYTHING!) so first off I sleep on a an old sheet and a blanket that I hardly care about. I hope I helped, Lia.

I can't use a tampon since I sleep longer than 8 hours too.

For my first couple periods I would go to sleep wearing a pad and in the morning it would be totally clean so on my next one I went to sleep using just a pad without wings because I didn't really like them and was trying to use them up really quickly but in the morning I was drenched in blood! It was all over my underwear, straight through the pad, on my pajamyas and even on my bed! I had to waddle to the bathroom and it was down my legs and was just so hideous. I had to take a shower and putting all that bloody stuff in the wash was really embarrassing because my dad does the washing these days!
