Dear BeingGirl Experts,

I'm 13 years old and have been getting my period for about six months now. I'm writing to you to find out how old I have to be before I can start using tampons. One of my friends says her sister told her you have to be sixteen. Another of my friends says you can't use tampons until you've had sex. Which is it?

Please write back as soon as possible and let me know because I would like to start using tampons, but don't want to do anything wrong.

Sincerely,

Hannah

Hi Hannah,

First, don't worry! You won't be doing anything "wrong" if you decide to use tampons for menstrual protection. Second: you don't have to be any specific age to wear your first tampon. Most girls can start wearing their first tampon as soon as they begin to menstruate, no matter what age. Also, there is absolutely NO connection between wearing tampons and having sex, so you can definitely use tampons long before you decide to have sex. As long as you understand the proper use of tampons and you can insert them, you should be able to wear them. Read about tampons in the information on tampon use and insertion at www.beinggirl.com/article/how-to-use-a-tampon. There you will learn all about tampons and how to use them, so you can decide if you are ready for them. Remember, tampons should only be used when you are having your period.

Hope that clears things up for you!

If you ask for my opinion on using tampon on your very first period,it's a bad idea!Just use pads like me!I want to start using tampons at age,16,17 or 18.so if your 13 and on your period just buy some pads and put them on instead of a tampon!

Don't get scared when trying a tampon it's not that bad as long as the tampon is full it shouldn't hurt when you pull it out just relax thats the key thing to do hope this helped somebody out there!!:)

I'm scared to try tampons. Some people told me they hurt when you pull them out because the liquid makes them expand, and when you pull it out its going to hurt. Is that true? Because i'm in dance and I can't hop around in a leotard and tights wearing a pad because it shifts. My mom has absolutely no problem with me attempting to use them because my aunt uses them. Using a pad with my period ruins my dancing, my swimming and other sports. While everyone's having fun dancing and swimming with a tampon, i'm the scared one who hasn't used one yet all because of what people have told me. I'm scared. What should I do?

Okay I really need help so someone write back please(: okay so I just got my period a couple days ago, I'm 13, and I am EXTREMELY active in basketball. I easily do 4 hours of basketball A DAY! When I first wore a pad during a basketball game it was VERY uncomfortable. I didn't play well because I was worrying about the pad moving around and stuff.... I want to start using tampons but I'm not sure if I'm ready yet. Since I just got my period, my flow isn't very heavy- its a little less than a normal flow and kind of spotty... Should I switch to tampons or wait a little longer ad continue with pads? Thanks!(:<3
