First Gynecological Exam
Dear BeingGirl Experts, I just started my period, and my mom wants me to visit a gynecologist. None of my friends who have started their periods have gone, and I am wondering whether it is really necessary for me to go, or whether I can wait awhile. Isabella --- Dear Isabella, Unless you have specific problems that need to be treated sooner, your first visit with your gynecologist (a medical doctor specializing in the health care of females, including teens and adults) should happen sometime between the ages of 13 and 15. You probably won’t need to have a pelvic exam (check of your internal female organs) during this first visit, unless you are having a problem or concern. If you are sexually active or have health problems related to the reproductive system, you should see a gynecologist no matter how old you are. Let mom know you appreciate her concern about your health! Your BeingGirl Experts
