Dear BeingGirl Experts,
I'm 5 3" and I weigh 156 lbs. I woke up this morning thinking I need to lose weight. I've seen movies on eating disorders, and I always thought, "Hey that will never be me," but lately I've become a vegetarian, and I exercise a lot. I have to lose weight. I was built to be thin, but I'm not.
I've read information about anorexia, and it always happens to thin girls that want to be thinner but I'm not thin. So could I be in the first stage of an eating disorder? I can't talk about this with any of my family so you're all I have. Please help me. I still eat just small portions.
Joanie

Dear Joanie,
At any age, the safest and surest way to lose weight is to eat healthfully and exercise regularly. We are not experts on weight, weight loss or body sculpting.
A quick Internet search can provide you with information on teen food needs, dieting, and vegetarian eating also. If you plan to be a vegetarian, be sure you understand how to get enough protein in your diet so that you stay healthy while still growing.
Before starting any weight loss program you do need to check with your doctor/health care provider. Weight Watchers or another support group is a successful way to learn to lose weight and keep it off.
Http://www.something-fishy.org/ is a link to a site with information on eating disorders. When you are concerned about eating disorders we recommend you talk to mom or another trusted adult. Your doctor/health care provider can help with diagnosis and treatment.
Hope this is helpful,
