Eating Disorder

Dear BeingGirl Experts,

I'm 5 3" and I weigh 156 lbs. I woke up this morning thinking I need to lose weight. I've seen movies on eating disorders, and I always thought, "Hey that will never be me," but lately I've become a vegetarian, and I exercise a lot. I have to lose weight. I was built to be thin, but I'm not.

I've read information about anorexia, and it always happens to thin girls that want to be thinner but I'm not thin. So could I be in the first stage of an eating disorder? I can't talk about this with any of my family so you're all I have. Please help me. I still eat just small portions.

Dear Joanie,

At any age, the safest and surest way to lose weight is to eat healthfully and exercise regularly. We are not experts on weight, weight loss or body sculpting.

A quick Internet search can provide you with information on teen food needs, dieting, and vegetarian eating also. If you plan to be a vegetarian, be sure you understand how to get enough protein in your diet so that you stay healthy while still growing.

Before starting any weight loss program you do need to check with your doctor/health care provider. Weight Watchers or another support group is a successful way to learn to lose weight and keep it off.

Hope this is helpful,

Don't worry too much. People who get anorexia and bulimia don't know that they have it because it is really a state of mind thinking that your to fat even when your thin. My mom would treat kids with these disorders all the time in the hospital and they would limit themselves to 400 calories a day and 3 grams of fat! So as long as you exercise regularly and eat healthy I'm sure you will lose weight and not develop those disorders. :)
