I have recently started having sex with my boyfriend, and I'm wondering when I am most fertile so that I don't get pregnant. Please let me know.

Dear Makenzie,

You are most fertile 14 days BEFORE the onset of your next menstrual period. You can get pregnant if you have intercourse a day or two before you ovulate, the day you ovulate, and a day after you ovulate. Using this information to try to avoid pregnancy is called the "rhythm method." But it's a VERY unreliable method. So, if you are sexually active and do not want to become pregnant, talk to your doctor/healthcare professional about birth control as well as how to protect yourself from sexually-transmitted diseases. When you are sexually active you need to plan a visit with your gynecologist/healthcare provider. This is important to protect yourself from infection and pregnancy.
