Even though Kristen was athletic, she didn't want to go out for the school field hockey team. She was afraid she'd make a fool of herself in the tryouts, and that if she got on the team, it would take up too much time.

Have these worries kept you from trying out for a sport? It's true, joining a team does make you busier, but it also adds to the quality of your life and teaches you life lessons.

Benefits of playing sports: Meet friends, learn skills

First, by practicing a sport, you'll burn anywhere from 300500 calories a day. You'll also strengthen your cardiovascular system and improve your muscle tone. Translation? You can wear that cool mini-dress and look great. (You'll feel great, too.)

Second, in our competitive society there are winners, losers, lucky shots, and bad calls. Sports help you prepare for it. Playing on a team teaches you how to work in a group, and prepares you to deal with the ups and downs of life. Scoring a goal or winning a race is a confidence-boosterso is showing up and playing well on a day you feel crappy.

Third, deep personal bonds develop by sharing exciting victories and dealing with losses with your teammates. You'll really get to know some great girls in your grade and in upper classes who can help youon and off the field.

Benefits of playing sports: All work and no play...

Finally, let's face it, college is around the corner. And what they say is true: Extra-curricular activities are important. Selection committees look for well-rounded, active, involved candidateslike you.

So stop wondering. Sports are great for improving your high school experience and preparing you for your future. Give it a shot!

No funner way to be active! I've been playing basketball for more than half my life. Before that, I was a figure skater. I've also done a bit of swimming, soccer, track & field and diving! :)
